Regen hope for centre of Swansea

19th November, 2013

Hundreds of homes in Swansea’s Sandfields community could be upgraded as part of a multi-million pound project.

Works including external refurbishment, insulation measures, repairs, boiler replacement and minor environmental improvements could be carried out if Sandfields is declared a Renewal Area in the near future.

A Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment Study undertaken over the last year in Sandfields is recommending the status for the area. This could lead to homes in streets that include Argyle Street, Bond Street, Fleet Street, Rodney Street, Vincent Street and Western Street being upgraded as part of the scheme.

Residents and organisations in Sandfields are now being asked for their views on the plans before Full Council in Swansea considers the recommendation.

Cllr June Burtonshaw, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, said: “Renewal Areas don’t just improve homes and the local environment – they also help revitalise entire communities. This is why it’s enormously encouraging that an assessment carried out over the last 12 months is recommending the status for Sandfields.

“We’re keen to do all we can to boost well-being and prosperity in our city’s most deprived communities. If approved, this scheme will help meet those aspirations by improving the appearance of Sandfields, improving housing conditions and reducing fuel poverty to benefit local families.”

Swansea Council has identified sources of funding for the programme and is currently bidding for funds to secure the investment needed. This would include funds from the Welsh Government, utility companies and investment from other private funding sources.

It is proposed the Renewal Area works programme would be carried out over a five-year period with the option for a two-year extension, if needed.
