Green scheme in Richmond offers pay-as-you-save initiative

25th November, 2013

People could get cheaper and greener heating through a new scheme.

Richmond Council is supporting the Government’s green deal scheme that helps householders and businesses install energy saving measures at no immediate cost.

Under the deal domestic and non-domestic properties can get a loan to fund efficiency improvements to offset increases in annual energy bills.

Cabinet member for environment Councillor Pamela Fleming said the scheme aimed to overcome the main barrier for people to invest in energy efficiency improvements to their home.

She said: “Even though the reduced energy costs from installing insulation or getting a new boiler would more than pay off the investment and make you better-off over time, many homeowners and tenants simply don’t have the money for the initial investment.

“The green deal removes the upfront cost. It allows you to install the measures and pay them off through the savings you make on bills.

“Once you’ve paid off the investment, you pay lower bills long term in an energy efficient way.”

People interested have a no-obligation assessment that shows ways to reduce heating and electricity costs. Whatever measures you decide to take are installed by a single provider.

The scheme has a pay-as-you-save rule that means repayments should never be more than the predicted savings on your bills.
