EST Helps Torbay Retrofit

8th August, 2012

The Energy Saving Trust with Torbay Development Agency (TDA) and other partners is working with Regen SW to provide intensive business support to Torbay-based businesses in the construction, energy efficiency and micro generation sectors via a new European funded programme, “Ready for Retrofit”. The project aims is to create a sustainable domestic energy efficiency and micro-generation sector in the south west, capable of delivering a large-scale refurbishment of south west housing stock.

As Torbay Council’s economic regeneration company, the TDA is working with partners to ensure that local businesses benefit from the additional support to help them develop strengths in this emerging sector.  The £8m Ready for Retrofit programme will help local businesses prepare for the delivery of the Government’s new Green Deal programme and the eco-refurbishment of tens of thousands of homes by 2020. The project will enable local businesses in this sector to benefit from the growing market fuelled by national financial assistance grants until 2020, such as Feed in Tariffs, Renewable Heat Incentive, Green Deal and the new Energy Company Obligation.

The programme, part-financed with £4m of European Regional Development Funding, will create a new industry and a sustainable market in the south west, capable of delivering over £2.75billion sales, over £1billion Gross Value Added (GVA) and potentially employing more than 2000 people between now and 2020. The aims of the project are: to accelerate market growth in the region (initially with and then without public subsidy); enable south west businesses to develop a competitive advantage over those in other regions as the national market grows in response to Government policy initiatives (e.g. the Green Deal); and: stimulate long-term growth in the south west through targeted demand and supply-side sector development.

Eligible south west SMEs, including those in Torbay, will be able to access free intensive business support and a £500 business development voucher from a Regen SW adviser, built around three main areas of support designed to create a competitive advantage for their business: value and cost efficiency, quality and delivery capability at scale.

Businesses can register interest in receiving this free support by completing the registration form at  or contacting the Regen SW team on (01392) 494399

Ian Hutchcroft, Head of South England Energy Saving Trust, said: “This is a major breakthrough for the south west, giving a huge boost to the local economy, helping tens of thousands of people reduce their fuel bills and making the region a more sustainable place to live and work. This initiative will leave a legacy of a strong green economy, new jobs and a skilled workforce.”

Alan Denby, Torbay Development Agency’s Director of Economic Strategy and Performance added: “The TDA works to generate economic prosperity and provide support for business, so we are very pleased to be able to offer, with our partners, this intensive business support for Torbay businesses.”
